Live from the Maui Photo Festival
Aloha Maui fans, it’s finally here!
Tonight brings us the opening ceremonies for the first annual Maui Photo Festival and Workshops, and all this week I’ll be bringing you the best of the fest and the island of Maui.
In preparation for the festival, I’ve been out shooting various spots on this gorgeous island, both day and night. You can check out some of the results on the Maui by Photo page on Facebook, as well as photos from my Flickr photostream.
Follow Along
If you’re not out here for the festival (or even if you are), you can still tag along with me by following @MauiByPhoto on Twitter. I’ll be sharing updates from the different excursions and sessions that I’m attending, including a Haleakala sunrise trip and a doors-off helicopter tour on Friday.
It’s going to be an amazing week that you don’t want to miss, and if you love photography on the islands, something you’ll sure to want to see for yourself next year, too.
Talk Story
As always, drop me a line or leave a note if you have any thoughts or comments on the festival. Give me a shout if you’re here and attending, and be sure to say Aloha.
Mahalo,
– Kris
Flickr Group: Road to Hana
Aloha,
There are literaly tons of great photos on Flickr, and over 500,000+ tagged with Maui. I thought it would be fun to feature some of my favorite Maui Flickr Groups to help you relive even more of your Maui vacation memories. Where better to start than the Road to Hana?
Road to Hana Flickr Group
The Road to Hana group on Flickr was one I was invited to help moderate earlier this year. We recently just hit 100 members, which might not seem that big compared to many of the larger groups on Flickr, but it’s still something to be proud of.
At the time of this post, we’re also pushing closer to 500 photos, too. That’s almost 500 of the best photos along the Road to Hana from regular Maui visitors just like you and me. Pretty neat stuff if you ask me.
Join In
Are you on Flickr, too? If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you have a few favorite shots of your own from along the road to Hana. So, why not join our group and share some of your Aloha with us?
More Maui Flickr Groups
If you’d like to read up on more Maui groups on Flickr, be sure to check out our Maui on Flickr page. And don’t forget, you can even add your own photos to the Maui by Photo Group and have them displayed right in our slideshow.
Lastly, if you know of a Maui group on Flickr that isn’t listed on our Maui on Flickr page, feel free to leave a note here or find me on Flickr.
Mahalo and enjoy,
– Kris
Share Your Photos
I’m happy to formally announce yet another great way to interact with Maui by Photo: the Maui by Photo Group on Flickr. By including Flickr along with Twitter, Facebook and your own stories here at the site, reliving your favorite Maui vacation memories couldn’t be easier or more fun.
So if you have your own Maui photos that you want to share with everyone and have a Flickr account, you probably already know how Flickr Groups work. If you’d like to see the photos submitted so far, find other great Maui Flickr groups out there, or just read more about sharing your photos, visit our Maui Flickr page.
Introducing #MauiSunset on Twitter
If you’re on Twitter and are following a few tweeps from Maui, you might have noticed last night’s sunset was pretty amazing. And thanks to this little 140-character service and complimentary sites like TwitPic, you don’t even have to live in Maui to partake in this nightly magic moment.
When I saw tweets from @DJSMOOK and @MauiHawaiiInfo with photos from last night’s sunset, it was obvious they were both worthy of a retweet. In that short second, I decided to throw in a new hashtag to keep photos like these together: #MauiSunset.
Within moments, @AMauiBlog strolled outside to her lanai, and snapped this beauty that stole the show.
And with that, others started joining in and the use of the #MauiSunset hashtag started its journey.
Spread the Aloha
Much like the awesome #aloha09 idea that started on New Years Eve last year, I think it would be great to see how long we can keep this nightly tradition going. It’s simple. If you’re on Maui and capture a gorgeous sunset, tweet it and include the #MauiSunset (and #aloha09) hashtag. Try to include where on Maui it was taken, and be sure to leave a little room for an RT, too.
As the nights go by and with a fair amount of participation, the search feed for #MauiSunset will surely fill up nicely, leaving a great list of Maui sunset photos for all to enjoy.
Let me know what you think and if you wanna help spread the word out there. And if you’re not already following @MauiByPhoto, stop by and say Aloha.
Mahalo, and looking forward to those great #MauiSunset pics.

Share Your Stories
I really hope you’ve enjoyed the photos here, as the initial feedback on Facebook and Twitter has been pretty positive. Maui is such a beautiful place to visit and to photograph, and I can definitely say for certain that each one of these pictures was a joy to take.
While a site with only Maui photos by themselves is surely worth the space on the web, I’m hoping for something more. What I’d really like to feature are your stories of the Maui you love and cherish as much as I do. Read More
